It’s my last Book of Mormon post, and I want to go out with
a bang. As I was looking back at my notes from February, I saw something I had
written while we were talking about 3 Nephi 4-10 – “Previous prophets have
looked to our day and rejoiced. Why? Ours won’t end in apostasy. We are the reason.
We aren’t victims of our environment.” I
absolutely love that line. We aren’t
victims of our environment. Of course, that has to be a choice. We can
choose to play victim to the things that happen to us, or we can take charge. Remember
that scripture in 2 Nephi? It’s chapter 2 verse 17 – “the Lord God gave unto
man that he should act for himself.” We are responsible to act for ourselves
and not just be a doormat with our actions. If we decide how to act based on
what others do and say, we will end up really miserable and unhappy. We have to
decide what we are going to do.
Our generation is a generation that can stand up for
themselves, that knows what is right and what is wrong. Our generation has the
fullness of the gospel. We don’t have to let the world decide how we act. We
don’t have to listen to the fiery opinions of others; we can make up our own
minds. We are great because we choose to be, and we must make that choice. Our parents and leaders and friends can’t
make it for us. Even when being acted upon rather than acting requires a choice
– a choice to let others walk all over us and determine what we do, say, and
feel. We are a chosen generation.
Remember who you are and what you are capable of. And if you can’t remember
that or don’t know, ask your loving Heavenly Father. He will tell you. It’s
like Disney movie, the Lion King. We are Simba, trying to decide if we will
face up or run. Rafiki is like the Holy Ghost, encouraging us toward the right
choice, and Mufasa is like our Heavenly Father, willing to give us a hand and
help us remember who we are. If you haven’t seen this movie in a while, go
watch it, and remember who you are and what you can do. :)
